Charlotte’s Lost Slavery History – Self‑Guided Walking Tour
Self-guided walking tour exploring Charlotte's Lost Slavery History in Uptown.
This self-guided walking tour invites families to explore 18 significant sites throughout Uptown Charlotte connected to the experiences of enslaved people in the city's early history. Using a digital Google map, you'll discover locations where enslaved individuals lived, worked, resisted, and were sold—learning about often-overlooked chapters of Charlotte's African American past. The tour is designed to be reflective and self-paced, allowing you to move through it at whatever speed feels right for your family.
The experience is completely free and open to everyone year-round, though it's being highlighted this summer during the NCAAHGS Conference weekend. You can complete the tour anytime that works for your schedule, though walking between 10 AM and 6 PM is suggested for the best visibility. All ages are welcome to participate. This is an independent project created as a Girl Scout Gold Award initiative, so there's no registration required—simply access the digital map and begin exploring on your own terms.
