Experimental Archaeology
Hands-on archaeology activities at the library.
Curious about how archaeologists discover how ancient tools and objects were actually made? This hands-on workshop gives teens a chance to find out firsthand. Participants will construct their own pump drill—a real archaeological tool—and then put it to the test by using it to create beads out of candy. It's a fun, tactile way to understand the detective work that goes into uncovering how people in the past made and used everyday items.
This program is led by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Archaeology Outreach and is designed for teens ages 12–18. Registration is required and opens two weeks before the event, with space limited to 30 participants. As of now, there are still seats available. If your teen loves hands-on learning and enjoys problem-solving, this is a great summer activity that blends history, experimentation, and a little creative fun.
