Open Play at the Nixon Park Nature Area
Free outdoor exploration at Nixon Park Nature Area with borrowed toys.
Kids can explore the natural world during open play hours at Nixon Park's Nature Area. The highlight is the Exploration Forest stream and muddy banks, where children can use provided tools like sifters, magnifying glasses, nets, and other basic supplies to investigate what they find. It's a hands-on way for young explorers to learn about nature while getting a little messy—so water shoes and a towel are definitely recommended.
This activity is free and available daily during regular park hours. Families visiting on their own can simply ask staff at the nature center's front desk to borrow the exploration buckets. If you're planning to bring a group of 10 or more, advance registration is required. Just call (717) 428-1961 x1 or email NixonCountyPark@YorkCountyPA.gov with your group's name, number of participants, children's ages, and contact information.
