Paws to Read at Matthews Library (ages 5-11)
Build reading confidence by reading aloud to a friendly volunteer dog companion.
Paws to Read is a literacy program where children read aloud to trained therapy dogs. It's a low-pressure way for kids to build reading confidence in a fun, supportive environment—dogs are non-judgmental listeners who genuinely seem to enjoy the company. Kids typically bring a book, settle in with a calm dog and handler, and read for 15–20 minutes. It's perfect for nervous or reluctant readers, since many children feel less anxious reading to a patient animal than to an adult. The dogs are gentle, vetted, and accustomed to working with children.
